I was there for work, nothing to do with the Uni, but the lass in the flat above mine used to host regular house parties and invite several academics she knew. As you can imagine they were, without exception, a bunch of supercilious bellends.

Our elder was at the university about fifteen years ago Geordie. She decided during the first year of the course that it wasn’t for her and left. Few realise I think how powerful the university is in the locality and they’re not averse to using their muscle to get what they want in the way of planning permissions and such like. One of the bellends even has the job title of “Motor Proctor” and dictates to students whether they are allowed to have a car, no kidding! The authorities in Cambridge hate the motor car and regard it as some unfortunate modern aberration which hopefully will shortly be banned or go out of fashion. In that respect they are just like their rival Oxford. I collected wide knowledge of English towns in my half century in field service and Cambridge and Oxford are both on my list of places where you would have to pay me to live.
