In rare public remarks, Jonathan Powell told a conference in Kyiv that Europe’s strategy of supporting Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Moscow was working.
Powell said talk of Russian escalation was “not a problem” but a “sign of success” that pressure on President Vladimir Putin was finally paying off – and as such European nations should not take their “foot off the gas”.

I have no brief for Ukraine as such. However, does anyone really believe that Putin’s territorial ambitions extend only to Ukraine? It’s not long ago that half of Europe was controlled by the Russians. Putin is ex-KGB and it’s common knowledge that he regards the collapse of the Soviet Union as a disaster and hankers after it’s resurrection. It’s safe to assume that if he manages to roll over Ukraine within a cost he can bear then it will be on to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania…..
I suppose that at least when he’s just the other side of the Channel it will fix the dinghy rider problem.
