A woman who complained that her stainless steel sink was rusting after having had it for only 11 months has said she was “staggered” when she was told to keep it dry.
Alison Theaker, from Kingsbridge, Devon, bought a new kitchen from furniture retailer Ikea in February 2025.
She said the sink in her utility room had developed rust spots, so she complained and was told it “down to general wear and tear”, as well as “clearly a case of excess moisture” and she should “keep the sink dry”.
Very good.
She said: “I queried how I was expected to avoid excess moisture on a sink” and “the person got back to me and said that I needed to keep the sink dry”.
“When I queried how this was possible, she cut me off,” she said.
Peak good old fashioned British customer service..
Call me somewhat cynical but I suspect all Chinese steel is by no means stainless,and probably not steel to begin with.
Let’s all hope Alison’s replacement sink remains pristine and rust free.

So maybe customers service thought she was one of them..
Quick test if your stainless is magnetic its the cheap 430 not 304 or 316.

I have to deal with chınkıes on a daily basis in an engineering capacity and they’re sneaky, slitty-eyed, cheating little assholes.
You order a complicated machined part and they’ll send you a test piece.
Perfect, with correct tolerances and anodising.
So you order a batch.
They’ve cheaped out on the aluminium grade, sloppy tolerances (to speed up machining time) and cheap anodising.
They can do it well, they just choose not to, the short-sighted locusts.

Poor Alison, had to go and tell the fucking BBC, she should have gone to the nearest IKEA store and stood outside with sink telling everyone going into the store that IKEA customer service think that a sink has to be kept dry, a big placard with Fuck off back to Sweden.

So let me get this right.

No joy when speaking to customer service, because her item had gone beyond its warranty period.
She then complains to higher authority who agree that she does have a case, and they resolve the matter with a free replacement and installation.
I’m struggling to see how this is a ‘news’ story.

I had a neighbour who was a stupid cunt too.
A few houses along from Casa Cunter, first line to the Med.
Every spring he would be out painting his ballastrades.
He would show off by showing me how little paint he used and the fact that he could keep his hands and clothes clean while working.
It was like he was on a mission to brighten things up and use the thinest layer of paint to do it.
The paint he used was white and from one of the local DIY stores.
Year’s ago and being the lazy cunt that I am, I got my Estonian builders to paint my walls.
I told them to use the best paint as I didn’t want it done again in a hurry.
They would have gone to one of the paint factories and brought the good, industrial stuff because I have only had to power wash a couple of times a year since.
Buy cheap and you end up paying several times more for something than if you paid the right price in the first place.

As Barry said, there are all different grades of stainless steel.
A few year’s back I had the roof taken off Casa Cunter and replaced with a flat solarium.
It’s big, complete with an outside kitchen.
I could have brought the cheap stuff but I knew that it would last for only a few months in the sea air.
I would have been able to hear it rust.
So I sourced and spent big on marine grade steel for the sink, taps, shower, cupboards etc….
I am sat looking at the stuff now.
Not a spot of rust anywhere.
Speaking of Estonian builders, a few months after their work was finished I noticed a small patch of the inside ceiling was discoloured.
I thought that they would have to remove all the floor tiles on my solarium to reseal everything.
They didn’t.
They had taken videos of every part of their work and after carefully looking through them they noticed the potential problem.
A few tiles were lifted and the remedial work was done in a few hours.
No problem since.
You get what you pay for.
