Charlie Kirk was a right wing activist and apparently a buddy of Donald Trump. Immediately after the shooting there was an outcry that he had been murdered by ‘a Lefty’, which if true would have suited Trump and his people down to the ground. It would have gone some way to even the score after the murders of Democrats by right wingers and they would have been able to present Kirk as a martyr to their cause.
Unfortunately that’s not how things turned out. The police discovered that the gunman, Tyler James Robinson, was raised in a Republican household and had links to the Groyper Army, led by Nick Fuentes. The Groypers are a group of white nationalist activists who have targeted other conservative groups and individuals whose agendas they view as counter to their concept of ‘America First’. So it appears that Kirk was shot not because he was right wing but because he was too mainstream.
Oh how they would have loved to pin it on the Democrats. Despite this disappointment, Trump’s people decided to go ahead and turn Kirk’s funeral into a tacky campaign rally, with pyrotechnics, MAGA merchandise for sale and his wife dressed in white. All rather vulgar, but the Americans have their own way of doing things.
