As absurd as it sounds its decline has half-ruined even the classic era for me, simply by association. What they should’ve done when it started to decline was FINALLY introduce proper continuity in the show and have the characters age or go through shifts like they do in Futurama. In fact, their Futurama crossover would’ve been the perfect opportunity to implement it – could’ve involved the characters from there telling the Simpsons they’ve ended up in the wrong universe and bringing them back to their correct one (without the floating timeline).
