I read they’re getting an even older fighter in the form of the F-16 Falcon, so what’s the issue? They also put in a request for F-18s with the United States at some point. Now this gaffe has strained relations between Australia and Ukraine.
The F/A 18 is a perfectly good aircraft for the Ukraine’s purposes- multi role, robust landing gears, relatively short take-off, and as for the supposed issues with ammunition and ordnance the article claims would arise if they took both the F-16 and F/A-18, both use the same Vulcan 20mm cannon and both are of the same generation of fighter jet. Both carry the same types of missiles and bombs (sidewinder, harpoon, Maverick, AMRAAM and JDAM) so the idea they need separate specialised ammunition is pure bunk.
The main issue is training Ukie pilots but again, both planes are similar in age and would not use wildly different systems. if the pilots can make the leap from the MiG and Sukhoi to F-16, then the effort to adapt further to the F-18 will be minimal.
Also, you’re fighting Russia. Get on with it.
