The season rumbles on and I still haven’t warmed to anything football related. The team I used to follow seems to be doing OK apparently and I honestly don’t give a flying fuck. I think we all liked to pretend the game is like it was when we kicked a ball around the park with our mates as kids. We chose to overlook the grotesque salaries, the ever increasing air headed cliched interviews of players and managers, the ever widening gulf between the fans and the players and the decline in quality of how the game is reported on and televised.
It’s not the same and covid has provided an opportunity for football to become political like never before. Putting image, virtue signalling and commercial interests first, football took that opportunity and the fans backlash (such as it was) instead of making the football authorities think, brought immediate condemnation, accusation and retribution. The game now exists entirely within a self-made bubble, populated by multi-millionaires, hangers on and bottom feeders. No actual fans required.
The fans are as irrelevant to them as these poor sods in Qatar. I firmly believe that getting excited and passionate about a game involving your favoured team is based upon what the game was, not what the game is. RIP Association Football.
