But off topic, it appears that our health secretary is saying that we should offer to fly British people home from Wuhan because of the coronavirus. Yes that’s right, bring them all back so they can share it with us! He suggests that those who arrive back here should ‘self-isolate’ to prevent it spreading. Is he insane? 0.7 % of our GDP is a lot of money to be spent on seemingly futile international incentives. I use the word ‘seemingly’ because the recipients of the (approximately) £14 billion don’t seem to be progressing; they just look like the same impoverished backwaters they have always been (i.e countries in Africa and the Indian subcontinent). I’ve no doubt that corruption and bureaucracy play a significant part in this lack of progress, in the form of political graft systems (systems where bribes, embezzlement and financial misappropriation are rife within elite ranks, leaving the ordinary people to suffer). It’s about time it was regulated and more transparent, so as to ensure our cash goes exactly where it’s supposed to go, and not into the pockets of the suits and powerbrokers.
