“Growing up in Wolverhampton, Stephanie Phillips says she was initially pretty much into the same chart music as her friends.
But alongside TLC, Aaliyah and Destiny’s Child, she developed a passion for rock, indie and punk.
“It was music that meant a lot to me as someone who was very shy and needed an outlet,” she said. Yet she felt compelled to keep that passion hidden.
“There was always this idea that black people weren’t really into alternative music, or punk,” the musician, journalist and author told the BBC.
“When I first got into alternative music I felt like I was betraying my race, and had to keep my love of rock practically secret,” she writes in her new book.”
“Black recalled that a famous 1980 photograph of her alongside Debbie Harry, Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex and other leading female artists, featured on the cover of New Music News magazine, was billed as representing “the women in rock”.
“And I suppose they needed a couple of black women in there as well,” she said.
“But it was interesting they couldn’t put one woman on the cover.”…
Even today, Phillips argues black artists were often forgotten, overlooked or deliberately excluded.
She cites Nova Twins, who took out a bank loan to record their debut album which received rave reviews but they still struggled to find a label, she said.
The issue is personal, she added, recalling the challenges of securing support for Big Joanie’s early releases.
“You do have to work harder. It can be exhausting.”…
Yes it’s vital that this immense conspiracy to suppress blek music is exposed and artistes compensated for this hideous outrage..
Or maybe it’s all in your head luv because you are a mental and your music was shit?

Do blacks ever stop finding racism everywhere they go?
They must be disappointed when their day goes by without anything that they deem racist happening to them.
16
Or, does the BBC ever stop promoting such mither and misery? There are forces that seem to strive to create these impressions.
12
The Tavistock Institute for one.
4
Siouxsie Sioux is my favourite female rock artiste, I think she is of Native American descent so not raycist.
9
I think her real name is Shy Anne.
🪶🪶
11
She must have missed Musical Yoot having a massive number one with a song encouraging teens to become druggies.
10
What about Pepsi and Shirley?
They were blek.
8
Skinheads used to like Reggae music.
Motown was big when I was a kid.
I remember going to see The Four Tops and The Temptations, plenty of other black bands too.
There is no racism in music.
Either an artist is talented or not.
9
Stephanie is full of shite and a professional victim.
Don Letts was a integral part of early punk and filmed the fledgling punk scene.
He says himself he faced no racism.
Poly Styrene seemed to be accepted she was mixed race,
Annabella Lwin was Burmese,
Helen of Troy was a midget she was accepted.
Maybe stop looking for racism and it’ll not impede you Stephanie?
you chippy moaning cunt.

Black music is awesome or at least it was,Wonder,Withers.Isleys,Four tops…many more but Rap is in my view a very satanic construct.
4
I agree, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Lionel Hampton, John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong – fantastic. Also a later name that was truly great, Michael Jackson. Of course he is cancelled despite being not guilty.

Bad Brains, Living Colour and Body count never existed?
The soundtrack to judgement night with the whole rock / rap crossover is also racist, because she says so.
5
I remember Body Count. Definitely a black rock or even metal band, although the themes tended to be about victimhood, how unfair life is, and the same thuggishness that is evident in rap music. Metallica were just as bad though on the first two. It’s all: war is bad, sorrow and misery, and it’s all so unfair.
These must’ve been some of the themes being promoted by record companies at the time for the plebs to indulge in.
I prefer Iron Maiden who, besides being far more musically talented and pleasing than any other metal band, were much more orientated towards themes of power, fantasy and things mythical, as opposed to ‘ain’t life on earth such a hard luck story’ (performed by scruffy cunts earning millions of dollars).
5
Iron Maiden are awesome.

The daughter of one of my electrical engineers is their accountant.

Let’s not forget the magnificent Al Jolson.
Way ahead of his time,an overlooked pioneer of the Blek Music.
3
Musical style/content like much else is down to individual preferences.
Want a list of my favourite bands? Of course you don’t.
But a short statement of fact instead. While neither artist is in a band of which I cared enough to amass their entire discography, on voice alone I find Meat Loaf and Skunk Anansie’s Skin my 2 most powerful examples.
One? .. An overweight caucasian ugly heterosexual male ; the other a skinny tall ugly black lesbian woman.
But boy, can/could they hit the notes. In their prime, anyhow.
Could whatever cunt was whingeing in the nom link define my view on race from that? Shouldn’t. Would probably go with ‘racist’ anyways. Like her fucking opinion matters a single solitary jot. Same for anyone talking shit, I suppose.
3
you forgot sweaty.
if Meatloaf was anything he was sweaty.
your spot on though 👌
2

Stick to your own shit, rap crap calling everyone N’gga
The more you see/hear about this sort of shit the more you think… why?
PS, it’s Black History Month (again)
PS, Ps, there is an Ad on ITV (sponsoring ITV programmes) A Shkoda car returning a family of pavement apes to their natural environment, surprised it hasn’t been flagged as racist.
