Colour Blind Casting

is a cunt. Gillian banks Theatre School, with only 200 pupils, wanted to put on a production of Dreamgirls, which charts the struggle of a coloured girl group ( think Supremes ) to get recognition and airtime in the 1950/60’s.

Out of the 200 pupils only one coloured person auditioned and was cast.

However, Concord Theatricals, the licence holders, withdrew permission as the school could not provide a “more diverse cast”

So its ok for people to accept a coloured Anne Boylen, indeed the entire family, on the grounds that it’s ‘colourblind casting’ , but when the reverse is true. It’s not on?

Can you spell hypocrite, Concord Theatricals?

  1. To be fair all the dàrkies were to busy to audition. What with all the drug dealing, looting and stabbing..

Dream girls, I imagine the quality of cast members it would soon be nightmare girls..
Sounds like a stroke of luck it got cancelled..

    • And presumably they meant black.
What about considering the muzzıe, ding-ding and chınky girls?
Just white and black girls is discriminatory against other touch-of-the-tar-brush types.
      Morning Bz/all.

  2. Although Dreamgirls was based on the Motown movement it wasn’t factual.

It was just a work of fiction turned into a reasonably successful film.

The girls in the original work of fiction were black, but they didn’t need to be.

There is no reason why a play or remake of the film should have a black girl group.

There is also no reason why a theatre school should want to put out a production and use the name Dreamgirls to promote it.

They could have given the production a different name and simply based it on the original.
That would have avoided any controversy.

    But they didn’t.
They tried to cash in on the success of the original.

I’m not suggesting that Concord Theatrical were right, they are hypocritical cunts.
But why give them the opportunity to be wrong?

    The Dream Factory.
    No problem.
Go out on the stage and enjoy yourself girls.

    Good morning.

  3. The show must go on!

    why not use blackface?
I know it’s not quite the same but needs must and all that.

    or puppets.

Stick a sequined dress on Cuddles the monkey… hey presto!
    Diana Ross.

  4. Discord Theatricals don’t own the rights to ‘Mammy’.
So slap on the boot polish and go for it, kids.

  5. Is is fucking stupid to re-imagine a successful production and give it the exact same name as the original.

It’s not only the theatre company but also the audience that will poke holes in the storyline and cast.
    They have a direct comparison.

I don’t think that West Side Story would have been such a success if the production team called it Romeo and Juliet.
The Lion King being called Hamlet?
The Magnificent Seven keeping the name Shichinin No Samurai?

There is enough inspiration available for adaptation into a new film or play.
But no, the theatre school were lazy and now they are complaining.

Fuck them AND the theatrical company.
