My own personal grocery shopping experience is that food prices have risen between 40 to over 100%.
Beef steak (not best) £30/kg
Beef roasting joint at £18/kg has now exceeded £17/kg for Lamb Leg
Whole Fresh Chicken £3 to £6/kg
Potatoes 50p to £1.20/kg
Now generally, I refuse to reward the larger money grabbing supermarket chains, only buying reductions after 5pm ;
Whole Chicken (dated that day) = £1/kg – cook it or freeze for later
Ready meals (luxury usually best reductions) £6 down to £2
Bread & Fresh fruit can be found reduced to less than 25% of original price.
We usually buy a 56lb sack of Potatoes from the Farm Shop at 23p/kg but are still using the leftover bags of Xmas spuds from Aldi (5p for 2.5 Kg)
We buy lots of 5p Xmas veg. Peel, parboil and bag for freezing they are cheap just requiring a bit of time & effort.
We no longer buy from the local chippy. I know we have the highest fuel & energy prices in Europe (3 x Germany) but some of these price increases are sheer greed. Cod at £11 I can sort of understand, but £4.50 for a bag of chips is expensive. £3 for curry sauce & 85p for one pickled onion is greed. Can of Cola @ £1.80 is dear given I can buy Carlsberg @ 52p, but what disgusts me is £3.20 for a 500ml bottle of water, that I can buy in a multipak for 18p.

Inflation? Pfft! You younger folks have seen nothing! Us old ‘uns lived with inflation ranging from 16% to 27% in the 1970s. We took on a mortgage in the spring of ’78 with repayments scheduled at £125 per month, by Christmas they were £200. Now that’s inflation.

I can eat very well on £25 a week buying only orange sticker co-op goodies and maintaining a well stocked freezer.
That and home brew, works out way cheaper to make 40 pints than to buy a case of pisswater beer which also has minimum pricing slapped on it.
Some chickens on the croft where the only predators are fucking sea eagles provide plenty eggs, some light exercise in the form of diving for scallops and some fishing on the kayak or from shore.
But how urban families survive on low pay with none of the above options besides orange stickers beats me.

We all know that the published inflation figures are a pack of lies, with CPI/RPI being cherry picked BS. The rise in prices is also personal to the individual and what they have been purchasing. For example, anybody who has had a building project or house renovation recently will know that the price of labour and materials has been eye watering. Having to renew a car has become very expensive. Gas and electricity were cheap compared to now, up until around six years ago.
The other thing is that it isn’t just about the ticket price but the amount and quality you receive. We also have shrinkflation, where the chocolate bar is now what used to be “fun size”, getting three crisps in a packet, and the quality of things is often terrible. Taking all of this into account, I suspect we have had inflation as bad as the 1970s. Maybe worse.
It makes me laugh when the politicians and idiots in the media tell us that inflation will “fall”. Do they mean that the rate of price increases will be lower? Because if the inflation rate goes from 5% to 4% for a given thing, the prices are still going up – and this is on top of all the previous increases. There isn’t anything to be happy about as a consumer unless the prices fall, and that would be a negative rate of inflation, or deflation. Or your income has risen and outstripped the inflation, but this is most definitely not the case for most people.
Balsamic Dave has hit nail on head for the covid causes. It was all absolutely predictable, but everybody was too busy being swept up in the stupidity of the scamdemic. Banging their pots and pans, putting their dirty face masks on, following the arrows in the supermarket. Being terrified of a glorified flu, where the average age of death was higher than the average life expectancy.
There was also the easy-credit monetary policies and money printing from 2008 onwards when the stupid government bailed out the banks. This should have been an emergency, short term measure, but it went on for ten years and then got put on steroids during covid.
The idiots in charge had been fooled into thinking this doesn’t cause inflation, as CPI and RPI were relatively stable and low up until around 2020. The general public had cheap shopping bills so no complaints there. However, this was most likely because we were importing so much cheap stuff from China and importing so much cheap labour. In other words, the inflation that should have happened was disguised by other phenomena, that were very damaging in their own right. Also, asset price inflation, such as the stock market and housing, gave the game away. So bailing out the banks has probably been a major driver of destroying this country, in addition to covid. In a sense, you can look at those ugly skyscrapers in London and see that England has been ruined to pay for a global financial hub.
By the way, I’ve seen one claim that, according to the obese cretin, Boris Johnson, he agreed to the massive “Boris Wave” whilst we were all locked down as the treasury advised him that this would help to control inflation. Well, inflation has been bad and much of that cheap labour has been zero-skill garbage that has gone on the dole or into prison. So it has been an utter disaster. But this does shed some light on how these imbeciles think. Mass immigration is seen as a way to offset their profligate and inflationary fiscal and monetary policies. But as with all things, there is a price to this. There is no free lunch in life.
Unfortunately, most people are ignorant about economics, and none more so than politicians and certain trained economists who believe you can have your cake and eat it too. Inflation is a dishonest shadow tax for a profligate state that fails to control spending. It is also a regressive tax, stealing relatively more from the less well off and transferring it to rich people who own more assets.
All the ideological detritus about multiculturalism and “diversity is our strength”, ad nauseum, is in the service of all that ^^. Indeed, the use of the word “racism” went up exponentially, both here and in the US, following the bank bailouts. Make of that what you will.

One of my biggest gripes is the cost of meat currently, and it just so happened that the ever reliable BBC yesterday, posted a lengthy article about the decline in demand for lamb.
There was much blathering and propaganda about the environment and protecting grassy uplands from greedy, grass eating sheep, and about trade deals with the US and New Zealand etc, but fuck all about the ultimate reason.
The reason being that the price of Lamb, especially, is fucking extortionate.
I’m all for backing British farmers, but there are limits, I’m afraid.
Anyway, the article did offer a silver lining at the end. Or at least a BBC type of one.
