I did indeed used to live in Minnesota (MN) and unfortunately still do. When I first lived in the US it was near Houston, Texas (TX). Lived there for 6 years, then moved to MN. Lived there for 11 years. Then moved back to TX for 5 years, then back to MN – again. You can thank my Minnesotan wife for that. And when I say thank, I actually mean blame.
I got my Permanent Resident card (Green Card) a few years after moving to the US. Twenty years later I applied for and was granted US citizenship. So I’m properly in the club now and very happy about that too. Yea for me!
MN is not great. Insane weather. Insane politics. Fucking state income tax. I don’t like it here and object to being so which I remind my Minnesotan wife about on a pretty regular basis. Why couldn’t she have been from somewhere nicer, like Hawaii?

Great questions. The full and complete answers would be very long and probably not that interesting so I’ll keep this as brief as I can.
Did my wife like Texas? Up to a point, yes. Things just didn’t work out the way we hoped after moving back there. I’ll admit that. Various reasons. I’ll cite just one. We moved back to the little town near Houston where I’d previously lived for 6 years. It was a neat little place. Friendly, spacious with a ‘small town America’ feel to it. I loved it. Unfortunately in the 11 years I had been away it turned into an absolute armpit. Some issues were obvious (e.g. beggars hanging around stop lights). Some issues were less obvious (e.g. massive over development meant street flooding when it rained). We made the massive mistake of buying a house before we fully realised what a shit show it had become. Things went downhill from there. Pity.
What did I like about Texas? Loads. The weather – it was hot/sunny 95% of the time. Food – Tex Mex is my favourite and there’s plenty of top quality choice there. Space – there’s plenty of it giving you a greater sense of freedom. Many more things besides too. Not perfect by any means, but I enjoyed my life there.
Is there anything I like about Minnesota? Not a lot. I suppose we do get all 4 seasons which you don’t in Texas. In the Houston area it’s hot/humid or very hot/very humid for 98% of the year (which I didn’t mind). Due to the climate pretty much all the vegetation is brown or dull looking (that gets old). In Minnesota, we get spring, summer, autumn and a shit winter. Lots of green and colour to enjoy when you’re out and about. Cost of living is OK-ish. Where we live we get to see a lot of wildlife on our property. Apart from the obvious birds and squirrels, we also see deer, wild turkeys, sandhill cranes plus lots of other critters. Aside from that, I’m struggling to think of major things I’m wowed about that are specific to Minnesota.
Overall, it’s American things I value rather than things which are specific to Minnesota. Freedom is a big thing here. You can’t really appreciate it unless you live it. I’ve said before, the UK is about ‘gotcha – no you can’t’. The US is about ‘yes you can – how can I help’. I love that way of thinking and living. The US is huge and everything is so spaced out. It’s not cramped here like it is back in the UK. Quality of life to a big one too. I enjoy a standard of living and quality of life here that I couldn’t get close to in the UK unless I earned 4x or 5x what I earn here. And that simply wouldn’t happen. In truth I don’t have too much to complain about. Big house, 3 acres of land, nice SUV to run around in, cheap petrol, no debt, money in the bank, easy and quick access to healthcare, the list goes on.
It’s not perfect, but I’m glad I’m here.

The present Republican administration led by Trump the Orange Dickhead does its best to make life difficult for blue states. For instance, if you’ve heard about ICE agents and even the military being sent to various cities to weed out illegal foreigners and other undesirables, it’s always blue cities that are targeted, never red.
Using alleged fraud issues supposedly committed by people in Somali communities, the government is threatening to withhold funding to the state. To do this may even be illegal, but that doesn’t prove to be a deterrent. Similar threats are also being made to California, yes you’ve guessed it, they’re blue too.
For many people in the States, the mid-term elections in November can’t come soon enough. If the Democrats re-take the House and the Senate, then Trump will become a lame duck president and many of his ridiculous actions will start to be reversed.

No new immigration laws pertaining to ICE have been passed by Congress since Trump took office. The Department of Homeland Security and ICE are merely enforcing laws already on the books. Hence, this is NOT Trump cracking down on poor innocent blue state victims. Rather it’s law enforcement actually applying existing laws which the Biden administration chose NOT to. Let that sink in.
The president doesn’t make laws. The US Congress does. If the Democrats don’t like what’s happening (why would you even side with sponging criminals over your own citizens?), then they could have changed the law while they controlled the House and Senate during Biden’s administration. But they didn’t and instead prefer to mouth off about Orange Man Bad.
