I feel about snowboarding the way old fogeys must feel about cricket which has changed from the days of crisp white shirts and trousers, with breaks for afternoon tea and sandwiches, to 20-over matches played by robots wearing multi-colored outfits plastered with advertising slogans under floodlights. When I skied over 30 years ago snowboarders were rare and generally bawled out by other skiers as a menace.
There can be no pleasure in screaming down a piste on a snowboard compared with the traditional method in which you can go at your own speed, tackle a difficult slope at your own pace, make your way across a mountain and not straight down it kamikaze style, and stop and admire the view.
