Not Going to the Pictures

Pa pa pa paa pa paa pa paa papa pa,papa pa pa pa paa pa pa POW!

Went the beloved Pearl&Dean theme; intermission, ladies selling choc ices from a tray round their neck, Sunkist, pop corn.
Was a big treat!!
My family only took me 3 times as a kid, my gran when I was about 5yrs to see ‘Jungle Book’,where I learnt about Kipling’s classic tale. Still love his cakes.
Then my dad took me to see ‘Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger’, where I learnt about the Muslim culture.
Then in 1977 my dad took me to see ‘Star Wars’; don’t think he enjoyed it but I did!
Although ahead of its time, a white man in bondage gear who talks like he’s black (Darth Vader), a gay robot (c3po) a midget in a bin (r2d2). A loud mouth sassy Yank princess , and the idea of a vast empire stretching out and using stormtroopers to enforce its will!!’Burn them alive!!’, shouted a 7yr old Miserable.

But as time passes no one goes the pictures now. The cinemas have turned into ‘multiplexes’-Yank shite.
Not a big treat anymore.
I miss it, now all the films have leading characters that in my day would be a villain or have subtitles.
Nowadays it’s preachy as fuck, every film has a message.I dont want a message, I want to be entertained!!

And a choc ice.

  1. Last films I went to see were the Freddie Mercury biopic, which wasn’t bad. And a 50th anniversary in 5.1 sound showing of Yellow Submarine at the Odeon in Manchester, which was fucking ace. Those Blue Meanies were top cunts.

  2. Remember going as a kid with Cubs, they only took us to watch confections of a window cleaner, seriously, aged 9, full of tits and arses! Thought it was great, can you imagine how many people would end up in court if it happened now?

  3. My favourite memory of the old, sadly demolished, local Regal was of my last time there, going to see a late night showing of ‘The Song Remains The Same’.

Police patrolling the queue outside, frisked by specially borrowed bouncers on the way in…almost had to give them my belt, but they decided it wasn’t that dangerous as the buckle wasn’t that heavy…tsk tsk tsk…not very observant..

Every biker, Angel, & assorted long haired degenerate from the surrounding area showed up, some from as far as 40 miles away..the place was packed.

Just after the Bugs Bunny cartoon, and before the film started, happened to glance out the doors into the foyer area…which was full of Police, shipped in specially, dressed in their finest Sunday best full riot gear (well, what passed for riot gear back then..), just waiting for an excuse to swarm in and beat the fuck out of us.

Grear night, no fucking trouble…which meant lots of disappointed plods.

I’ll never be able to watch that film on a TV, no matter how bloody big they get, it really wouldn’t be the same.experience.

    • I saw Gimme Shelter at the Cornerhouse in Manchester, it was great. Cocksucker Blues was going to be shown too, but they cancelled it at the last minute.

I also saw the Jesus Christ Superstar film one Easter Sunday at a special screening at the Mayfair. That bit where all the old paintings of the crucifixion appear frightened the shit out of the girl I was with.

  4. Great nom. I remember when I was about 15 going to see “Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush” and gawped at the scene where Judy Geeson shows her bare arse. I stayed on for the second screening. Another moment still recalled from that era was Haley Mills flashing off her pert little uncovered bottom in “The Family Way”. Life has never been the same since then.

  5. Problem with cinemas is the food people munch and the talking. Last time I went to see a film was about 2016 and I remember a woman turned up with a supermarket bag full of food and rustled the contents relentlessly until I couldn’t take it anymore and told her to shut up. The inconsiderate cretin looked surprised!

  6. I used to go to the cinema after work with the wife a lot before all this flu manchu shite. Less rustling and talking for starters.
I get what you mean Miserable  about the quality of films now, all woke and full of CGI and weak plots.
British films still hold their own in this regard I think.
The worst are all the Avengers films and Star Wars is heading that way now Disney bought the franchise. They just keep banging out at least one film a year with the same plot just different CGI. Put me off both franchises now and I’ll only watch them if they are on the telly.
