I dunno about this cunt, or this cunting. 500K deaths was his early worst-case scenario. At the time it looked as if Covid was killing ~1% of those infected, and the likelihood of infection was high. So, if no measures were taken to prevent this, it didn’t need a fancy mathematical model to arrive at a ballpark figure of 500K for the UK. Might even have been on the low side.
The fact that deaths so far have been a lot less is down to the fact that measures were taken, so well done, measures! Proof: when the measures are eased, infection rates rise significantly, followed inevitably, two or three weeks later, by the resultant deaths.
Some of his earlier work has also been taken out of context too, and rotten journalism was as usual to blame for misinforming the public*. Read this only if you’re interested in both sides of an argument, otherwise keep polishing that tinfoil hat.

Certainly, and subsequently, the public messages have been confusing. “Excess deaths” – above the numbers to be expected in a normal year – seems like the safest measure to go by, as it takes account of the baseline of old and ill cunts dropping off the perch from all other causes and subtracts that. The remaining number probably (statistics aren’t about numerical precision) died as a result of Covid. Whether they had a previous condition or not (statistics aren’t about individuals).
Getting that much across is probably beyond the scope and intention of a tabloid journalist, whose paper won’t get read without a “SENSATION!” headline.

1. If he is misquoted and taken out of context by the tabloids or any other media, then as a public health official he has an obligation to say so…publicly and forcefully. And to keep saying so until the record is corrected and the public has the correct information.
2. A couple of years ago a woman I loved died. She had cancer. Her system was so weakened from Chemotherapy that she got an infection in her intestinal tract and was unable to fight it off. As a result of that infection she died. Her cause of death was attributed to cancer.
Is that a distinction without a difference? Likewise, how many deaths have been attributed to Covid?

That is, the “excess deaths” criterion is a valid measure, although it isn’t precise enough to include debatable outliers. What measure is?
