We recently had some exceptionally heavy rainfall here in the southern part of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria. It rained for 2 or 3 days and nights, coupled with some strong winds to boot.
Naturally enough some rural village areas suffered from flooding due to the lack of proper storm drains, as well as having to tolerate rain water cascading down from the nearby Fells – including Scafell Pike – the highest mountain in England.
But then towns and some cities also suffered from flooding (Workington, Barrow, Carlisle, to name but three); and again most issues were due to lack of storm drains, or drains that haven’t been cleaned out in years; or the various rivers that run through these places, and that haven’t been dredged or fully reinforced as a form of flood-defence.
But what really is annoying – and this isn’t just a local problem – is how planning committees just don’t seem to care much about the issues of flooding when it comes to approving new housing estates, some of which are actually in or near floodplains!
All these councils care about is the extra council tax revenue when they sign off on the latest application for 500 toybox homes. The issue regarding possible flooding is just kicked down the road for some future council committee to worry about.
How the fuck they’re allowed to get away with this pisses me off. Plus they always plead poverty when it comes to “doing something” such as cleaning the storm drains, improving how rain water is redirected away from built-up areas, or building flood defences.
And then you have insurance companies dragging their fucking feet trying to wiggle their way out of not paying out on perfectly genuine claims!
Every year its the same old shit: heavy rain = floods = fuck all gets done about it.
Cunts!

It’s the daft cunts that want flood barriers put all along the local riverbank that gets me. You can’t blame them for not wanting THEIR town or village flooded, but they are just sending the flood water a mile down the river to the next town – and so on.
Get the diggers in there dredging and deepening the rivers beds to improve capacity – but no! the squirel nutkin brigade are their complaining about you uprooting water voles & disturbing the eco system. FFS
By the way, Labour & the Tories are trying to out do each other on spending pledges & promising more flood defences, but NO government wants to tackle the real problem & put new storm drains in.
The current drain system was installed in the Victorian era, when streets were cobbles and every garden WAS a garden.
Now tarmaced roads are everywhere & 90 % of gardens are block paved or slabbed. Drains are handling 200% capacity even when we don’t get heavy rain. Rain / Grey water recycling should be installed in all new homes too.
Use a sticking plaster when a big bandage is needed….this country in a nutshell 🙄

On Monday last I had to visit the county hospital for some tests etc. My journey to this hospital is a good 20 plus miles and my chosen route is rural to say the least. On taking the road towards Short Ferry I discovered that a new inland sea had formed and to continue past the road closed signs and barriers would have required something more nautical than my old Subaru, a long detour followed but hey this is the Witham Fens flat, low and floods sometimes. This flooding is something that happens when a lot of rain falls OK maybe not this bad very often but one does not need a PhD in hydrology to realise low lying flat land that was a marsh will flood sometimes. If the river lis running very high you cannot pump the water into the river. Water backs up in drains etc then blows the bank, flood. This simple principle seems to be hard for builders, councils etc to understand. The Fens will and do flood. Build your fucking houses somewhere else.

I wonder if there is a single council that maintains the drains properly?
Spent all the money on an Afghan Rainbow parade?
Fuck off.

First the swarms of locusts from across the channel, now flooding I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of firstborn babies die next.

Met an Aussie on a recent holiday who said exactly the same thing – filling in flood plains with housing – happenes in Oz all the time. (The Brisbane floods a few years ago as an instance). It’s all about corrupt officials taking back-handers, and fuck those who really matter.
