But still the hospitals are able to cope with emergencies. When I was taken in when phoning the emergency number after a TIA stroke last year, I was in umpteen wards of all old white men, being looked after by dedicated nurses from morn till night. I was allowed home after a number of tests and at the moment I’m coping very well by myself.

The way that it works here is that when an ambulance is called the very first question is, “Who’s paying?”.
This applies to Spanish citizens as well as residents or anyone who injures themselves on holiday.
Not all Spanish citizens are part of the health system. You have to pay in before you can get anything out.
If you are not in the Spanish health system or you have no insurance or means of paying for treatment then you will not be treated, at all.
I suppose that there may be a few charities around willing to help some people, but have an accident without being able to pay and you will be left in the street.
