Back in 1948 the British army was involved in the Malaya Emergency.
A uprising by communists were attacking rubber plantations and being a bit of a nuisance. So we sent in the army.
Now Malaya is dense jungle. So we hired some Iban guides from Borneo. We’d used them before against the Japanese.
Now the Iban are charming people. Affable, friendly, polite. But also happen to be head hunters.
Now our ancestors, the ancient Britons were also headhunters. Reason the Romans used us as auxiliary troops. Now the Iban started taking the heads of Malayan communists. The Royal marines joined in and everyone was having a splendid time.

I’m married to a Lithuanian, and thus have Soviet born in-laws. For the most part, the Soviet invasion of Lithuania and the treatment of the locals was fucking beastly with deportations, repressions, mass surveillance, massacres, etc.
Earlier this year, I was speaking to my other half’s granny about when the Nazis invaded Lithuania in ’41. She said they were bastards for the most part, but “well dressed, polite (if you weren’t Jewish) and far less barbaric than the Soviets.”

I think the more that is learned about the Soviet Union, the clearer it becomes as to just what a colossal cunt the regime was.
God knows how many people were tortured, murdered, starved and worked to death in camps during its appalling time.

The USSR’s a real difficult one, Ron. The immediate post-revolution years up until Khrushchev were really, really violent and dark. That’s when the deporations, mass murders, etc took place.
My in-laws grew up in the ’70s and ’80s so lived through Brezhnev’s era of stagnation, perestroika, and the collapse. By all accounts, most of those years were actually quite nice – free education, free health care, a strong sense of community, and repressions were not as strong as before as the system was in free fall.
Where they are from, the town had three shops, a cinema, a cultural centre, three schools, and various amenities that made life just that little bit nicer. There’s a saying from that era – “nasha prekrasnaya sovietskaya zhizn'” or “our lovely Soviet life”. Given when Lithuania joined the EU, they basically removed all of that.
In Eastern Europe, however, there is a general concensus amongst those who lived through the Nazis and Soviet occupations that the Nazis were the better of two evils.

In a similar vein to your naive student apologists, Ron, are the pro-Palestine marches that are a current and regular feature in our towns and cities. There’s a big one on in Liverpool this weekend. The marchers seem blind or too stupid to see the oppressive nature of the Islamic regimes that they support. There were plenty of their easily offended and outraged sort around in my younger days too. US out of Vietnam was a favourite theme.
Let them march today and afterwards go for a good piss up in the Union bar at Damascus or Tehran Universities and see how that goes down with the mullahs.

The more I read of history the worse it gets. The conclusion I’ve come to is that pretty much every country is run by wrong uns.
Governments inevitably end up viewing their own citizens as the main enemy and then the rest of the world a close second. Government and organised crime are closely related.
It’s not even the elected that are the main problem, it’s the organisations government creates to sustain government, these organisations eventually decide they should exist above government and to a greater or lesser degree rule above the government.
There’s nothing the Nazis or the communists did that couldn’t be replicated in country. civilisation is a thin veneer.

Problem was the plantation was owned by a Frenchman who was not happy at all with them being there. Dad said they stayed in ambush for over two days but the commies were a no show. The French man appeared well chuffed and was making a big thing about how they left him alone. So after he had fucked off Dad and his comrade put three Bren gun magazines through his bungalow roof when the somewhat ashen faced frenchie returned he was told the commies would have burnt his bungalow to ground if Dad and his comrades had not been there. He never told many stories but had some Shiite nightmares even in his 80’s

I lived in Germany for two and a half years in my younger days. I lived in Dusseldorf and also Koblenz.
I actually loved it, and the people were great. I also very nearly got married there (and I should have done). But, would I go back there now? I don’t think I would.
My German friends tell me about how Merkel and her government have fucked over the German people even worse than we have been.
Flooded with human muck from Middle Eastern, African and Eastern European shitholes. Women are afraid of being raped by sandfilth, crime has soared, and they have had to put up foreign language signs in the swimming baths and showers, asking camel fuckers not to shit in them.
The standard of living when I was there (1990 to 1993) was superb. I have no doubt that this will now be lost forever. Import Third World shit, you will ger Third World shit. And they will spread like a plague. Diveristy is a pestilence and migrants are a disease.

@ Norman, I also lived and worked in Koblenz in 1985 and it was a great place where the Mosel meets the Rhine. I was just going on 20 years of age and met some great people with great beers and more.
My boss told me at the time that Germany was going to be one of the strongest economies in all of Europe and he was right and even after the fall of the wall, they managed too absorb East Germany.
