The marriage failed and I returned home in ’09, but to go over to England, marry, work and settle I needed to qualify and pay quite a bit of money to various government departments both here and there. And I hit the ground running and luckily for me had the potential of work once I was entitled to do so – nothing flash, I drove a bus. But the whole exercise was costly in terms of my personal finances (and excuse me if I refer to the union of marriage in such a tasteless way as an ‘exercise’ – It was done out of love, but … long story).
My situation was completely different from those who drift ashore on a makeshift junk and immediately claims hard-done-by status with an outstretched palm. It doesn’t take long before they’re “livin’ large” on the proceeds either by driving hotted-up cars, wearing their designer jeans down around their knees and sporting the latest model devices acquired from a brother-in-arms in the war against work.
