You can’t actually escape from an open prison, as the nom correctly says, he absconded.
That basically means that he walked out of the open doors.
These category D prisons are not locked, by definition of “open”.
He served 11 years of his stretch and would only have been sent to an open nick in readiness for his release.
To get some rehabilitation.
He wouldn’t have gone there if he posed a danger to the public as anyone can walk out whenever they want.
Absconding is fucking stupid as once captured or banged up for another offence he would never be sent to an open prison again, no matter how much of his sentence he has served.
He is a dodgy looking cunt and it seems obvious that he should never have been sent to an open nick in the first place.
At least a category C nick has locks on the doors.

The prison pictured in the nomination is a category A.
It is secure, up to the point of probably only allowing out convicted Pákís by mistake.
Drive past an open prison like the one the wóg absconded from and there will be a gate, open and the keys have been long lost.
Go to the nearest town of an open nick at a weekend and you will see prisoners on the streets and in the pubs with their families.
You will recognise them from the prison gear they will be wearing.
There is no need to abscond.
It’s odds on that the daft black bastard that walked out of the cushy nick will reoffend.
He will then have to serve the remainder of his present sentence, plus whatever new sentence he gets in a secure, locked prison.
Unless things have changed, he will also have to wear an orange jump suit for the time he is in nick.
